Southern Alberta Sees Spike in Dangerous Radon Levels

Calgary, AB – March 25, 2025 — A silent health hazard is lurking beneath homes across Southern Alberta, and recent findings show it’s worse than ever. According to local radon professionals, several homes in the region have recorded radon levels as high as 2,500 Bq/m³—more than 12 times Health Canada’s recommended action level of 200 Bq/m³.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps into buildings from the ground. Odorless, colorless, and tasteless, it poses a serious health risk with long-term exposure, particularly as the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada, after smoking.
While radon levels vary based on geology and soil conditions, Southern Alberta appears to be a hotspot. “We’re seeing more homes testing well above the danger zone, and not just in rural areas,” says a spokesperson from Calgary Radon Detection Inc., a local leader in residential radon testing and mitigation. “We’ve recently had readings pushing 2,500 in Calgary and nearby towns. It’s not something you want to ignore.”
Experts stress that radon levels can differ significantly from house to house—even on the same street. That’s why testing your own home is essential. Long-term radon test kits are affordable, easy to use, and widely available.
When high radon levels are found, mitigation systems can reduce concentrations by over 90%. The most common method, sub-slab depressurization, draws radon from beneath the foundation and vents it outside. But not all systems are created equal.
“A bad install won’t cut it,” adds Calgary Radon Detection Inc. “We’ve seen systems running for months where levels barely moved. Proper diagnostics and professional installation make all the difference.”
With growing awareness and alarming readings across the region, homeowners are being encouraged to act. Testing is the only way to know your home’s radon level—and the first step in protecting your family.
